Winter Quarter 2020
We are accepting art in all creative mediums (drawings, paintings, writing, etc.), and our current theme for Winter 2020 is Home (Deadline: January 31st, 2020). We want to explore the intersections of race, sex, gender, etc. through this filter and highlight art touching on these topics.
Email your work to ummagazine.ucsb@gmail.com. You can submit your work to be featured online or in print. Write “For Print” or “For Online” on your email subject line and include your title piece, marginalization, and any publication specifications (ex: if you want Piece A to be published next to Piece B, if you’d like to include the background of your image, etc.). If you are submitting a picture of your work, please cut out any background images not included in your piece. If you’d like, you may include your social media handles as well!
Ex: Attached is my painting, titled “Erasure”; my pronouns are she/her/hers; and I identify as a Korean-American woman.
We want you to include your marginalization so our readers acknowledge the voices of the artists and recognize where they’re coming from. Though they may feel restrictive, identifying labels can open up discussions about privilege and power and further highlight the need for intersectionality. By lumping all marginalized artists as simply “marginalized”, we brush over the diverse inequalities each artist faces and perpetuate institutional ignorance.
This is, of course, optional and up to you, whether you feel comfortable presenting yourself with societal labels. We will still publish your work even if you choose to exclude your marginalization, pronouns, or even your name. You have the option to submit anonymously; simply specify your request in your email.
Please do not take advantage of anonymity if you do not qualify to submit and respect the space of this publication. We encourage allies to support this intersectional community by reading and sharing our work.
You must submit Original Content, as in content that has not been published by other magazines/publications.
